When Was the Last Time You Checked Your House?

When was the last time you really checked your house? I don’t mean walking through the front door after work or noticing that the kitchen faucet is dripping. I mean walking around the outside, looking closely at the walls, windows, landscaping and sprinkler system. We spend so much time making our homes beautiful that it’s easy to forget they need a little maintenance, too.

Houston weather is tough on our homes. Between the heat, humidity, heavy rain and irrigation systems running throughout the year, your home’s exterior is constantly being exposed to water. And sometimes, the very system that keeps your landscaping green can be causing damage to your house without you even realizing it. This is especially important for homes with stucco exteriors.

Stucco is beautiful, durable and a popular choice for many Houston homes. But it isn’t indestructible. One thing homeowners may not think twice about is where their sprinkler heads are pointing. If your irrigation system is spraying directly onto your stucco every time it runs, you could be creating a problem right outside your front door. Repeated exposure to water can cause staining, discoloration and deterioration over time.

So, the next time your sprinklers come on, take a minute to watch them. Are they watering your flower beds and lawn, or are they also watering your house? A sprinkler head that has shifted slightly over time might now be spraying directly onto an exterior wall. It’s a small detail, but it is exactly the kind of thing that can go unnoticed until you begin seeing signs of damage.

And don’t just look at the sprinklers. I recommend making a habit of walking around your home every few months. Look at the areas you normally never notice: behind bushes, alongside yards, around windows and doors and underneath gutters. Your home will often tell you when something needs attention. A new crack, damp spot or discoloration may be easy to dismiss, but catching a small issue early can make a big difference.

And sometimes, it’s worth bringing in a professional. A home inspection or exterior inspection can help identify issues that aren’t obvious to the untrained eye, particularly when it comes to moisture, cracks or areas hidden by landscaping. If you notice something that doesn’t look quite right, having a professional take a closer look can help you understand what needs attention before a small issue becomes a much bigger one.

Think of it the same way you would think about maintaining the inside of your home. You wouldn’t wait until your refrigerator stopped working before realizing it needed attention. Your home’s exterior deserves that same kind of care.

If you are thinking about selling your home someday, these details become even more important. Buyers notice more than beautiful countertops and fresh paint. The condition of the exterior can shape how a home feels from the moment someone pulls into the driveway. Taking care of small maintenance issues along the way can help protect both the appearance and long-term value of your home.

So, this weekend, grab a cup of coffee and take a lap around your house. Watch the sprinklers. Look at the stucco. Check the landscaping. You might be surprised by what you find! Your home is one of your biggest investments, and sometimes protecting it simply starts with paying attention.

Until next time,
