Where Boots Meet Big Business: Houston’s Rodeo Season

Houston, it’s Rodeo season! Each year, millions of people gather in the city for one of its most beloved traditions: the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. For more than twenty days, Houston is filled with rodeo competitions, carnival rides, livestock shows, concerts, and celebrations of Western heritage. Families, friends, and visitors from across the country come together for an event that has become a defining part of the city’s identity. In many ways, rodeo season is the perfect time to fall in love with Houston, as it showcases the city’s culture, hospitality, and community spirit that make it so unique.

This year’s lineup includes major performers like Luke Bryan, Megan Moroney, and Lizzo. Yet beyond bringing top-tier entertainment to the stage each night, the Houston Rodeo also plays a major role in supporting the local economy and community. In fact, it’s one of the most impactful annual events in the region. In 2024 alone, the Rodeo generated $326 million in total economic impact and $597 million in total economic activity across the Greater Houston area, including $179 million in direct spending on hotels, restaurants, entertainment, shopping, transportation, livestock, and agricultural equipment tied to the event. Unlike many large events that occur only once in a city, or that happen multiple times but are certainly not annual, the Houston Rodeo returns every year and consistently generates hundreds of millions of dollars in economic activity.

Attendance is a huge part of that impact. In 2024, more than 2.5 million people attended the event during the 23-day celebration. Visitors travel from across Texas and around the world to experience rodeo competitions, carnival attractions, livestock and agricultural events, art exhibitions, Western heritage celebrations, and nightly concerts. With crowds this large, the Rodeo brings significant business to local hotels, restaurants, and shops throughout the Houston area, while also supporting thousands of jobs. In 2024 alone, the event supported 3,538 direct jobs and 5,694 total jobs across Greater Houston, including hospitality workers and event staff, as well as agricultural exhibitors and vendors.

Another defining part of the Houston Rodeo is the community behind it. More than 35,000 volunteers help bring the event to life each year, contributing over 2.1 million hours of service. This dedication speaks to the strong sense of community behind the Rodeo and Houston’s culture of giving back.

The organization is also deeply committed to education. In 2024, the Rodeo invested more than $27 million in scholarships and youth programs to support students across Texas. Supporting education, promoting agriculture, and preserving Western heritage remain central to the Rodeo’s mission.

Year after year, the Houston Rodeo continues to be one of the city’s most anticipated events. With millions of visitors, world-class entertainment, and hundreds of millions of dollars in economic activity, it’s more than just a celebration. The Rodeo showcases Houston itself: the energy, culture, and generosity that define this city. For a few weeks each year, Houston just does it bigger.

Personally, I’m most excited to soak in the concerts, the crowds, and the incredible energy that rodeo season brings to Houston. I hope to see y’all there!

Until next time,
