The Ultimate Fourth of July Guest Guide

With the Fourth of July approaching, chances are you’ll be invited to at least one celebratory dinner and fireworks viewing. Everyone talks about what to do as the host: the perfect place settings, wine, and menu. But society rarely mentions how to be an exceptional guest, and it’s not as easy as you might think. You shape the energy of the evening just as much as the host. The people make the place; the guests make the party. Think warm, considerate, and complimentary.

Houston blends not only cultures but also cuisines. From Tex-Mex to Italian to Vietnamese food,
Houston has it all, and dinner parties are all the rage this summer! Fourth of July festivities in
Houston can range from the classic backyard barbeque in West-U to rooftop firework dinners
Downtown. No matter the atmosphere, I’ll prepare you to be the perfect guest in any home. Let’s
discuss Houston hospitality, inspired by the beloved culinary mogul and hostess of Barefoot
Contessa Ina Garten’s timeless advice on what you should and shouldn’t bring to a dinner party.

When you receive the invite, your first instinct might be to bring food or wine as a gift. These are
common and kind gifts; however, they might not always be well received. Ina Garten often
discourages bringing a dish as it might negate the host’s hard work in meal preparation. To keep
the host in mind, try reaching out prior to the dinner to ask if there is a certain dish you can cook
or bring. Fourth of July events often have casual menus—burgers, brisket, and sides galore. Or, if
you opt for wine, ensure it complements the meal. No one wants white wine with barbeque!

Communicating with the host to ensure your gift doesn’t clash with the evening is very
important; if you do, you will definitely earn a gold star in their books!

If you aren’t the best chef, or your busy schedule doesn’t allow time for you to make a dish,
flowers are another great option! Whether your flowers are from Randalls or Ode à la Rose, they
will be greatly cherished. Fresh flowers aren’t simply thoughtful gifts—they add elegance and
beauty to any room.

But before you hand your host a bouquet, let’s make sure it’s in tip-top shape! For Fourth of July parties, consider festive red, white, and blue arrangements or a simple bouquet of sunflowers for a summery touch. You can elevate these gorgeous flowers by cutting and arranging them in a vase or mason jar. Although it’s a small task, and there is a slight difference in the presentation of the flowers, every host will greatly appreciate your efforts for making their hosting duties a tad easier!

Here’s to good food, great company, and even better manners! Whether you’re attending a July
Fourth cookout or planning to host your own, it might be time to find your dream entertaining
space. Reach out to me today to start your journey!
